What Is ADR02ARZ?

ADR02ARZ is a 5.0 V precision bandgap voltage reference IC developed by Analog Devices (ADI) and belongs to the ADR02 series. It provides a stable reference voltage over a wide supply voltage range, making it suitable for ADCs, DACs, precision measurement instruments, and industrial control systems.

ADR02ARZ comes in an 8-lead SOIC surface-mount package. It features a TRIM pin for fine adjustment of the output voltage. With an external buffer and a simple resistor network, the TEMP pin can also be used for temperature sensing and approximate temperature measurement. In addition, the 8-lead SOIC version of the ADR02 series can serve as a drop-in replacement for the industry-standard REF02, helping simplify the upgrade and design of certain existing circuits.

How Does ADR02ARZ Work?

ADR02ARZ operates based on bandgap voltage reference technology. It uses two bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) with different current densities to generate a proportional-to-absolute-temperature (PTAT) voltage. This is combined with the negative temperature coefficient of the transistor base-emitter voltage (VBE) to compensate for temperature variations, maintaining a stable reference voltage over a wide temperature range of −40°C to +125°C.

Once the bandgap circuit generates a stable reference voltage, an internal high-gain, low-noise operational amplifier and output driver regulate it to a standard 5.0V DC output. Precision thin-film resistors and laser trimming during manufacturing help achieve high initial accuracy and low temperature drift.

ADR02ARZ uses a series-reference topology and operates from an input supply of 7V to 30V. Its internal feedback loop adjusts the output driver to maintain a stable 5.0V output despite supply or load variations.

Simplified Schematic Diagram

The circuit illustrates the core architecture of the ADR02ARZ. At the bottom, the Q18/Q19 transistor pair and precision resistor network form the bandgap reference core, generating a stable bandgap voltage (VBG) through complementary positive and negative temperature coefficients. The TEMP pin provides a voltage proportional to absolute temperature. At the top, the amplifier and Q9/Q10 output driver form a closed-loop feedback system, working with the R5/R6 network to regulate the output at 5 V through the (VO) pin. The TRIM pin also supports external fine adjustment of output accuracy.

PCB Layout and Decoupling Best Practices

1. Decoupling Capacitors

Capacitor selection: Use 0.1 µF and 1–10 µF capacitors at the power supply and output.

Placement: Place the 0.1 µF capacitor within 3 mm of the pin.

Grounding: Connect capacitors to AGND with short traces.

2. Noise and Grounding

Grounding: Connect Pin 4 (GND) to AGND and separate it from switching and digital grounds.

Sensitive pins: Keep TRIM (Pin 5) and TEMP (Pin 3) traces short and away from clock signals. Leave TRIM unconnected when unused.

3. Stress and Thermal Management

Thermal relief: Use thermal-relief pads to reduce soldering stress.

PCB placement: Keep the IC away from board edges and mounting holes.
